Netherlands vs England Preview

The Euro semifinals are here and we are down to the final four teams in the competition. This week, we are focusing on the Netherlands vs England on July 10th at 8:00 pm. The match kicks off in Dortmund, one of the biggest stadiums at the 2024 Euros.

Ronald Koeman and Gareth Southgate will hope for continued improvements when the sides face off on Wednesday. The Dutch started slowly against Turkey but eventually outshone a spirited Turkish side. England went through the usual motions, conceding first and fighting back before it was too late. In the end, the Netherlands avoided extra time and England aced their penalties.

Netherlands vs England Predictions

Prediction: Netherlands 0-0 England (England to win by a penalty shootout)

Euro 2024 started with lots of goals and fantastic performances. As the importance of advancing to the next stage came front and centre, teams have been trying not to lose rather than going for the win. Both sides are guilty of this, and we expect a 0-0 game after 90 minutes. Both sides will create chances as their defences have looked flimsy throughout the tournament, but England will win another penalty shootout to go to consecutive UEFA Euro finals.

England will start the brighter side, looking more dangerous in attack and controlling the ball. The teams will allow each other lots of possession along the back line but will struggle to create clear-cut chances. The Dutch will have the best chance of the game late in the second half, and England will hang on for extra time. As both teams tyre, the game will open up for the final half hour. Each side will squander their chances and require penalty kicks to decide on a winner.

If the game goes to penalties, there is no way of knowing how the Netherlands will respond. England took five perfect penalties against the Swiss. Each player that stepped up found the corner and looked confident. The Dutch have avoided penalties so far. There is no telling how they will handle the pressure, but the Brits look assured.

In the knockout stage of Euro 2024, Koeman’s team has looked the better unit. After a surprise defeat to Austria, the Dutch destroyed Romania 3-0 and bounced back from one down to beat Turkey 2-1. England also bounced back to beat Slovakia 2-1 thanks to a Bellingham bicycle kick. Bukayo Saka rescued England again when they faced Switzerland with a brilliant curling effort which went in off the post. Both sides have the personnel to challenge whoever they meet in the final, but they have been underwhelming all tournament.

If it comes down to support, the Dutch have been fantastic in Germany. Their fans have lit up the streets consistently, which could be the deciding factor in an important game of tournament soccer. Betting on the Netherlands seems the most likely option this week, but nobody expected England to get this far. While they have only faced Slovakia and Switzerland, they did not look up to even beating those sides. However, they did, and that makes them dangerous.

Our prediction is for England to win this game via a penalty shootout. While the teams have many similarities, there is one key difference. The Dutch have avoided extra time in both knockout games. England needed this period to beat Slovakia and required penalties for the Swiss. Could these extra minutes help when this game goes the distance? Or will the fresher Dutch players come out on top?

Netherlands vs England Betting Tips

Knockout soccer offers good returns for both teams if you have been betting on the Euros. That applies to this match, but England is the clear favourite. At our online sports betting site, the Brits have odds worth 13/8. A €10 wager on England will return €26.30 if they can get a result within 90 minutes. Remember, the full-time result must be settled in 90 minutes and does not include extra time or penalties.

Our prediction of a draw after 90 minutes is worth 2/1. That means you stand to make twice as much in profit as the value of your bet. So, your ten-euro bet will return €30, including €20 in profit. Betting on the Netherlands is the most profitable option, but also the least likely. At 12/5, a €10 bet yields €34 if Koeman can get a result before extra time.

As our Euro 2024 prediction for this game is for a victory by a penalty shootout, you can secure significantly more rewarding odds. Either side to win by penalties is worth 7/1. Betting on England to get the job done in extra time is worth 9/1, for the Dutch it’s 11/1. These odds are rewarding, but also quite risky. If one of these teams somehow finds that missing gear, they could settle this game long before the 90th minute.

This fixture will be tight, which brings over/under betting into play. Looking at the odds at Novibet, you can bet on under 1.5 goals in this match. With odds of 6/4, a €10 bet will return €25. Both teams have struggled to score, which means we could be in for another tedious 90 minutes. The Dutch capitalised on Turkish mistakes last game, but it will be much tougher against England. If you fancy a goal fest, it’s 8/15 for over 1.5 goals in this match.

Besides betting on the winner of this match, you can investigate other markets. Cody Gakpo is the most likely to find the back of the net out of every orange shirt. Players like van Dijk and de Vrij pose a massive threat on set pieces. For England, a goal is likely to come from Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham. Bukayo Saka scored in the last round, but that was his first of the tournament. However, we are sure it will be an uneventful first and second half.

In matches like this, you can look at live betting. If the match is as dull as we expect, there are plenty of markets to consider. Using the Bet Builder, you can make an accumulator on yellow cards, corners, and shots on target. Plus, you can combine the bet for this match with our Spain vs France prediction.

Netherlands vs England Key Stats and Head-To-Head

Historically, the Netherlands have been the better team compared to England. The countries last faced off in the UEFA Nations League semifinal in 2019. The match finished 3-1, but it required extra time. Ronaldo Koeman’s side did enough to win, securing a goal in each half of extra time. Gareth Southgate will hope for a better showing, as both teams will have a vastly different lineup.

The first eye-catching moment of the game came in the 30th minute when Marcus Rashford caught Matthijs de Ligt on the ball in his box. He lunged in, but Rashford got their first and won a penalty. He easily slotted home the opener from the spot. Dutch defender de Ligt made up for his costly mistake in the 73rd minute when he headed home from a corner. The centre-back slipped his marker and finished confidently from six yards out.

Jesse Lingard thought he won it for England seven minutes from time, but they ruled the goal out for offside. John Stones outdid de Ligt by dawdling on the ball inside the penalty area during extra time. Pickford saved Depay’s shot, but Quincy Promes’ deflected effort chipped the keeper to give the Netherlands the lead. Ross Barkley became the villain when he cheaply gave away a dangerous pass from John Stones. Depay was there again to square it to Promes, who made no mistake in front of the empty net.

England won the meeting in 2018, but the Dutch have come out on top often on the international stage. Since that game in 2019, both sides have drastically revamped their squads. Out of both starting 11s, only seven have been regulars in Euro 2024. The game five years ago does not do the sides justice as England completely fell apart. Southgate will hope those days are behind him as the sides face off on Wednesday.

Betting on England to progress to the next round by any means is probably your best bet. However, consider the Dutch have scored more easily throughout the tournament. Who knows what will happen after kicking off, but the most likely outcome is both sides struggle to create goalscoring chances.

Netherlands Team News and Predicted Lineup

Ronald Koeman has no injured players or suspensions to contend with, but he has one major problem: his formation. Koeman opted for a 4-3-3 early in the tournament until the shock defeat to Austria. Since then, the Dutch have enjoyed more success in a 4-2-3-1.

However, Steven Bergwijn is usually the right winger in this system and has not survived past half-time in any knockout game. The most likely replacement is Donyell Malen, but Woug Weghorst was preferred for a change of shape. After halftime, the Netherlands looked much more comfortable against Turkey.

  • Predicted Lineup: B. Verbruggen, N. Aké, V. van Dijk, S. de Vrij, D. Dumfries, T. Reijnders, J. Schouten, C. Gakpo, X. Simons, D. Malen, and M. Depay.

England Team News and Predicted Lineup

Last round, Gareth Southgate matched the Swiss with three at the back. He will return to four at the back, even though his side looked more comfortable. England fans will hope Luke Shaw is fully fit to resume left-back duties, reducing the need for multiple right-backs in the starting formation.

The system does not suit Harry Kane, but can you afford to leave him on the bench in the most important game of the tournament so far? Kobbie Mainoo will resume his duties alongside Declan Rice.

  • Predicted Lineup: J. Pickford, L. Shaw, M. Guéhi, J. Stones, K. Walker, P. Foden, D. Rice, K. Mainoo, B. Saka, J Bellingham, and H. Kane.
